Sugar scrubs are perfect to use during the winter months. They'll help protect and nourish your skin from the harsh winter weather. Sugar scrubs make perfect gifts and stocking stuffers. Plus they're inexpensive and easy to make yourself. This sugar scrub is full of healthy ingredients too. And did I mention how amazing they smell?
Moisturizing coconut oil will make your face soft and smooth. There are many healthy benefits for using coconut oil in facial products. It helps with dryness, flaking, and various skin problems like psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. Coconut oil also helps with the natural aging process by reducing wrinkles and sagging skin.
Raw honey helps prevent your skin from drying out by sealing in the moisture. It acts as a cleansing agent by absorbing impurities from the pores. When mixed with an oil base, honey helps to dissolve and remove makeup. It's filled with wonderful antioxidants, so it helps slow down the aging process. Honey also has natural antibacterial properties since it contains hydrogen peroxide which helps prevent acne.
Sugar helps hydrate your skin and keep it moist. It's also perfect for exfoliating dead skin cells from your face and lips. Scrubs can be made with white, brown, or raw sugar depending on how coarse you want the scrub to be. Brown sugar is the softest, making it a great choice for the face. Raw sugar is very coarse, so it's often used for body, hand, or feet scrubs. You can test a small batch of each sugar type on your skin to see what works best.

SUPPLIES

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (white, brown, or raw)
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (I used organic, unrefined coconut oil)
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • One 8-oz wide mouth mason jar
  • Cloth jar covers
  • Twine ribbon
  • Free printable hang tag

    DIRECTIONS

    1. Add all ingredients to a medium sized bowl. I used room temperature coconut oil (not liquid) and mashed it into the sugar and honey. To make it easier to stir, you can slightly warm coconut oil by placing the jar in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. DO NOT microwave coconut oil!
    2. Stir well until combined. It's ok to have a few chunks of coconut oil left in the mixture.
    3. Store in an airtight sealed jar. This recipe makes enough to fill one 8-oz mason jar. I used an 8-oz wide mouth Ball Elite canning jar in my photos.
    4. Print the free hang tags to add to jars. Further decorate jars for gift-giving with cloth jar covers and ribbon.

Not into hot pink? Just print the hang tag on kraft paper instead! I made a batch of brown sugar scrub and paired it with more natural looking decorations. Our free printable hang tags come in hot pink and red colors.

    VARIATIONS

    • Sugar scrubs can be made with as little as two ingredients. The basic formula is 3 parts sugar to 1 part oil. Use white, brown, or raw sugar depending on how coarse you want the scrub to be. Brown sugar is the softest, so it's a great choice for the face. Raw sugar is coarse, so it's often used for body, hand, or feet scrubs.
    • Use other oils such as olive, sweet almond, or jojoba oils instead of coconut. Using an unscented oil is a good option if you plan to add essential oils or spices.
    • Add Vitamin E oil, essential oils, vanilla extract, or spices to sugar scrubs. A few drops of Lavender essential oil helps achieve a calming effect before bedtime. Cinnamon helps treat acne, eczema, and other skin infections. It also stimulates blood vessels which plumps up your skin. Adding scents like peppermint oil or pumpkin pie spices make great holiday scented sugar scrub gifts.
    • While I prefer care products to be more natural, some people like to add a few drops of food coloring. Add just enough food coloring to tint the scrub so it doesn't stain skin or clothing. Natural colorings from freeze dried berries are another option.

    HOW TO USE

    • Wet your skin, then apply sugar scrub with your fingers. Gently scrub your lips too! You can use sugar scrub a few times a week.
    • Massage sugar scrub into skin in a circular motion until sugar dissolves. If you have sensitive skin, use a light touch when applying. You may also want to test a small patch of skin first to see how you react to the ingredients.
    • Rinse off well with water and pat dry.
    • Follow up by applying lotion to help seal in the moisture.
    • Now pucker up and plant some kisses!
